Could your dry eyes be related to your menstrual cycle?

Dry eyes are a very common symptom among many women today. New research suggests that dry eyes may be related to to women's monthly cyclical changes in hormone levels, in particular, related to their estrogen levels. This research suggests that the estrogen peak (seen above) which occurs during the follicular phase is associated with impairment of tear production resulting in ocular dryness and inflammation.

  1. I am confused. Is menstrual related dry eyes caused by too much estrogen or not enough estrogen?

  2. Alexa, thank you for your question. Every woman normally has what is referred to as an estrogen peak during their menstrual cycle which involves an increase in their estrogen levels. For some women, the increase in estrogen levels which occurs during this estrogen peak is associated with dry eyes.

The study suggests that it is the cyclical increase in estrogen levels associated with the menstral cycle itself rather than a deficiiency or excess of estrogen that may cause dry eyes.

  3. I am going through menopause. My estrogen is too LOW and my eyes are severely dry as a result. I am still having periods and the day or two before it starts can be very rough when my estrogen bottoms out.

    I am confused.

  5. Chronic Dry eyes develop due to the eyes not producing adequate amount of tears. There are many symptoms of chronic dry eyes which includes itchiness, prickliness, sensitiveness to light, blurry eyesight, dryness etc.It develops as your age grows, menopausal phase or medical disorders. Turbulent weather conditions, smoke, air-conditioners and heaters, constant wear of contact lenses can increase the risk of dry eyes. For more details refer chronic dry eyes
